ASUS ROG Strix G531GT RAM Upgrade: 24GB (8GB + 16GB) Tested - Performance, Compatibility & Benchmarks (2026)

Upgrading the ASUS ROG Strix G531GT to 24GB RAM - 8GB + 16GB Combo Tested [2026 Guide]

Asus ROG G531GT RAM Upgrade
If you’re still gaming on the ASUS ROG Strix G531GT with 8GB RAM in 2026, you’ve probably hit the wall. Stutters in Warzone, Chrome eating all your memory, and "Out of RAM" warnings in Premiere.

I was in the same spot. So I upgraded my G531GT to 24GB using a 1x8GB + 1x16GB DDR4 2666MHz combo instead of buying a new laptop. Total cost: ₹5500.

Here’s everything you need to know: specs, channels, performance, installation, and whether this mismatched setup is actually worth it.

1. The Starting Point: Stock RAM in the G531GT

The ASUS ROG Strix G531GT launched in 2019 with a budget-gaming focus. Most configs came with:

    • 1x8GB DDR4 2666MHz SODIMM pre-installed
    • 1 empty SODIMM slot for upgrades

My stock stick:

    • Brand: SK hynix
    • Size: 8GB
    • Type: DDR4 SODIMM 260-pin
    • Speed: PC4-2666 = 2666 MT/s, CL19
    • Voltage: 1.2V
    • Rank: 1Rx8 Single Rank
    • Model: HMA81GS6JJR8N-VK

8GB was fine in 2019. In 2026? Not even close. Modern games alone use 10-14GB. Add Discord, Spotify, and 20 Chrome tabs and you’re swapping to your SSD constantly. That’s where the stutters come from.

2. Laptop Compatibility: What the G531GT Actually Supports

Before you buy RAM, know your limits. ASUS lists these specs officially:

  1. RAM Type: DDR4 2666MHz SODIMM, 1.2V only
  2. Slots: 2x SODIMM slots, user-accessible
  3. Max Capacity: 32GB = 2x16GB
  4. Channel Support: Dual-Channel + Intel Flex Memory Mode
  5. CPU: 9th Gen Intel Core i5-9300H / i7-9750H. Both have dual-channel memory controllers

3. Key Rules for G531GT RAM:

  1. Speed Cap:  The motherboard is locked to 2666MHz. A 3200MHz kit will boot, but run at 2666MHz. Don’t pay extra.
  2. Voltage: Must be 1.2V. 1.35V "XMP" gaming RAM won’t give you any benefit and may cause issues.
  3. Form Factor: Must be SODIMM. Desktop DIMMs are too long and won’t fit.

4. The Upgrade: Why I Chose 8GB + 16GB = 24GB

I had two options:

  1. Option A: 2x8GB kit = 16GB Dual-Channel for ~₹4000
  2. Option B: 1x16GB stick + keep old 8GB = 24GB Flex for ~₹5500

I went with Option B and bought a single SK hynix 16GB 2666MHz 1.2V SODIMM from Lamington Road, Mumbai for ₹5500 INR.

Final Config:

  1. Slot 1: SK hynix 8GB 2666MHz 1.2V CL19 1Rx8
  2. Slot 2: SK hynix 16GB 2666MHz 1.2V CL19 1Rx8
  3. Total: 24GB DDR4 2666MHz

Price Breakdown:

₹5500 for 16GB = ₹2750 per 8GB

That’s exactly market rate in India right now. A 2x16GB kit would be ₹10,000-₹12,000, so this was the sweet spot for price to capacity.

Why same brand? It’s not required, but matching SK hynix means identical timings and sub-timings. Less chance of instability.

5. How Does 8GB + 16GB Work? Intel Flex Memory Explained

This is the #1 question: "Will mismatched RAM kill dual-channel?"

Short answer: No.

Intel CPUs since 2008 support Flex Memory Mode. Here’s how it works on the G531GT:

Memory Address Range Channel Mode Bandwidth Allocation
0GB – 16GB Dual-Channel 8GB from Stick 1 + 8GB from Stick 2
16GB – 24GB Single-Channel Remaining 8GB from the 16GB Stick

What this means in real life:

66% of your RAM runs at full dual-channel speed. Windows and games will always fill the "fast" 16GB first. The last 8GB is only used when you’re doing heavy multitasking. Compared to 16GB pure dual-channel, you lose ∼0-3% FPS in games. But compared to 8GB single-channel, you gain 15-25% FPS + zero stutters. So yes, 24GB Flex > 16GB Dual for anyone who does more than just gaming.

6. Form Factor, Timings, and Stability Testing

Let’s get technical for 1 minute.

  1. Form Factor: 260-pin SODIMM, 69.6mm long. Don’t confuse with desktop 288-pin DIMM.
  2. Speed/Timings: Both sticks are JEDEC 2666MHz CL19-19-19 @ 1.2V. No XMP needed.
  3. Rank: Both are 1Rx8 single rank. Mixing 1Rx8 and 2Rx8 usually works, but can limit speed on some boards.
  4. Stability Test: I ran MemTest86 for 2 passes + 3 hours of Cyberpunk 2077 + 50 Chrome tabs. Zero crashes, zero errors. As long as speed/voltage match, mismatched sizes are 100% stable on Intel.

7. Real-World Performance: Before vs After

Test system: G531GT, i5-9300H, GTX 1650 (4GB), SSD 256, Windows 11

Gaming:

Game 8GB Single 24GB Flex Difference
Warzone 2 52 FPS, heavy stutter 68 FPS, smooth +30%, no stutter
Cyberpunk 2077 41 FPS, RAM 98% 48 FPS, RAM 14GB used +17%, no texture pop-in
Valorant 144 FPS 144 FPS, GPU bound No change

Biggest win: 1% lows. The game no longer freezes when loading new areas because we’re not hitting the page-file.

Productivity

  1. Chrome: 40 tabs + YouTube + Docs = 12GB. Was impossible before.
  2. Premiere Pro 2025: 4K timeline scrubbing went from "laggy" to "usable". RAM preview is 3x faster.
  3. Blender: Can now handle 20M polygon scenes without crashing.

Boot & Multitasking

Windows boot time dropped ∼4 seconds. Alt-tabbing between game and Discord is instant now.

8. Step-by-Step Installation Guide for G531GT

No tools except a Phillips #1 screwdriver. 5 minutes.

  1. Power Down: Shut down, unplug charger, remove all USB devices.
  2. Access Panel: Flip laptop. Remove 11 screws. Use a plastic pry tool around the edges. Don’t yank.
  3. Locate Slots: You’ll see the stock 8GB stick and 1 empty slot next to it.
  4. Install 16GB: Open the side clips. Insert the new stick at 45° angle, gold pins in first. Press down until it clicks.
  5. Reassemble: Put bottom cover and screws back. Don’t overtighten.
  6. Verify: Boot > Ctrl + Shift + Esc > Performance > Memory.

It should read: 24.0 GB, Speed: 2666MHz, Slots used: 2 of 2, Form factor: SODIMM

Warranty Note: ASUS India officially allows RAM and SSD upgrades. Just don’t tear the small "Warranty Void if Removed" sticker near the hinge.

9. Common FAQs

Q: Will 24GB use more battery?
A: Negligible. Maybe 3-5% less battery. The performance gain is worth it.

Q: Can I add 2x16GB later?
A: Yes. The G531GT supports 32GB max. You can sell your 8GB + 16GB later.

Q: What if I mix 2666MHz + 3200MHz?
A: Both will run at 2666MHz. You wasted money on the 3200MHz stick.

Q: Is 24GB overkill for gaming?
A: For just gaming, 16GB is enough. For gaming + streaming + editing, 24GB is perfect.

10. Verdict: Should You Buy 8GB + 16GB in 2026?

Buy this 24GB combo if:

  1. You multitask heavily: gaming + streaming + editing
  2. You already own 1x8GB and found a cheap 16GB stick
  3. You want the best price-to-capacity ratio under ₹6000

Buy 2x8GB or 2x16GB instead if:

  1. You only care about max FPS in competitive games
  2. You want to sell your old RAM immediately
  3. Budget isn’t an issue

For the G531GT specifically, 24GB at ₹5500 is the best upgrade in 2026. It extends the life of this laptop by 2-3 years easily.

Final Thoughts

Don’t get scared of "mismatched" RAM. Intel Flex Memory has made it a non-issue for years. The G531GT with a 9300H + GTX 1650 + 24GB RAM is still a very capable 1080p machine in 2026.

If you’re on the fence, just do it. The stutter-free experience alone is worth ₹5500.
